Dakine Explorer Backpack for kids is one of the larger packs that we carry for kids.  The Explorer is out of Dakine's skateboard pack line so it can of course carry a deck for your young skater.  Even if your child isn't carry a skateboard it's still a great school pack for older elemenatry school kids all the way through middle school.  The straps are about 18" long so it's a bit big for smaller children.  At 1750 cubic inches it's got the volume to accomodate a three ring binder, a lunch box, jacket, and plenty of books.  The outside pocket opens wide and has a few pouchs for organizing as well as pen/pencil holders and an additional small zippered compartment.  At the top of the pack there are two zippered pouchs, one with a brushed lining for glasses or electronic devices and another larger one for stashing other goods such as hat and gloves.  The straps on this pack are connected as one piece to help distribute the weight across shoulders more evenly.  Another big plus is that there is also an adjustable sternum strap.  The sternum strap is a huge help for keeping the straps secure on a smaller child.  Mesh pockets on the side are big enough to accomodate a 1 litre Nalgene bottle.
