The Dakine Scooler Backpack for kids is one of the most unique offerings for children.  It's a smaller pack that has a removeable lunch box a great school pack for pre schoolers up through elemenatry school age.  The straps are about 14" long which makes for a great fit for smaller kids while still being big enough to accomodate a 3 ring binder.  Volume wise it's not huge but with the lunch box on the outside it frees up space on the inside for extra layers of clothing and books.  There are two zippered compartments, one main compartment and a smaller outer one.  The outer one does not have organizing pockets but is plenty big enough to accomodate a large pencil case.  Another big plus is that there is also an adjustable sternum strap.  The sternum strap is a huge help for keeping the straps secure on a smaller child.  The outside pockets have an ingenious elastic gusset that can keep a hat or mittens secure or expand to accomodate aas much as a 1 litre water bottle.
